Orchestra Victoria Secures International Opera Star!

World-wide opera sensation Rinat Shaham will give her first and only Australian performance with Orchestra Victoria in the Great Hall at NGV International at 1pm on Tuesday 28 July.

The Israeli born mezzo-soprano has received accolades for her operatic and concert performances throughout the world. Next week Orchestra Victoria will introduce her to Australia.

Artistic Director Jo Beaumont said “Attracting Rinat to make her debut Australian performance in Melbourne is a major coup for Victoria and highlights Orchestra Victoria’s standing within the international arts world.”

Opera Australia Assistant Music Director Tony Legge is coming to Melbourne especially to attend the concert. He said “Rinat Shaham is one of the most exciting Carmens I have ever heard or seen, and I hope she will become a regular visitor to Australia.”

Orchestra Victoria was able to engage this outstanding artist through the Orchestra’s Principal Guest Conductor Marko Letonja, returning to Melbourne from Europe for this concert. Jo Beaumont planned to include Berio’s Folk Songs on the NGV program and discussed potential vocalists with Marko. He had worked with Rinat Shaham in a production of Carmen with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Munich earlier this year. Their collaboration was a great success and Marko believes that her voice and personality is an ideal match for Orchestra Victoria.
