About Mathew

Originally from Sydney, Mathew began his musical journey playing both percussion and violin. He holds a First Class Honours degree from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and has completed post-graduate study at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) and the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. In addition, Mathew also has a Graduate Diploma in Psychology from Monash University.

Mathew has been fortunate to learn from a variety of primary teachers during his studies. In Australia he studied under the tutelage of Shaun Trubiano, Daryl Pratt, Richard Miller, Mark Robinson, Peter Neville and Christine Turpin. In the United Kingdom he learned with Adrian Spillet, Matthew Hardy, Toby Kearny, Andrew Herbert, Kevin Early and Grahame King.

Outside of Orchestra Victoria, Mathew has worked as a freelancer throughout Australia and overseas, performing with the Melbourne, Sydney and West Australian Symphony Orchestras, Australian World Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and Royal Ballet Sinfonia of the Birmingham Royal Ballet.

Mathew is a past winner of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Snare Drum Award, the Reuben Scarf Award for Percussion, and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music Concerto Competition.
