About Rebecca
Rebecca Johnson is one of Australia’s leading flautists and piccolo players, with a career spanning orchestral, operatic, ballet, chamber, and contemporary performance across Australia and internationally.
Adelaide-born, Rebecca has worked with most of Australia’s major orchestras, including appearances with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (as Guest Principal Piccolo), the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra and as a long-term casual with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra for over 20 years. Internationally, she has performed as Guest Associate Principal Flute with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and was a finalist for the Principal Piccolo position with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in 2021.
In 2014, Rebecca relocated to Melbourne to work with Orchestra Victoria, where she has been a central member of the woodwind section. In 2025, she was appointed Principal Piccolo of Orchestra Victoria.
Rebecca completed a Bachelor of Music (Orchestral Studies) with First Class Honours at the University of Adelaide, and later undertook a Master of Arts (Performance) at the Royal Academy of Music. There she studied with leading flautists Michael Cox, Karen Jones, and piccolo specialist Patricia Morris and intensive private study with BBC Symphony Principal Piccolo, Kathleen Stevenson.
