Orchestra Victoria acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land on which we work, the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and Boon Wurrung people of the Eastern Kulin Nations. We pay our respects to their Elders past and present, and to all First Nations people across Australia, whose traditions of music making and storytelling have continued on this land for millenia.
Good evening, and welcome,
We are delighted to present this special performance of Parasite, presented in partnership with the Melbourne International Film Festival and ConcertLab. At Orchestra Victoria, collaboration lies at the heart of what we do, and today's event is a celebration of music’s ability to transcend boundaries, enrich storytelling, and transform the cinematic experience.
It is an honour to welcome the esteemed composer Jung Jae-Il, joining our orchestra for this remarkable production. His artistry and vision bring extraordinary depth to our performances.
We extend our gratitude to CVP for preparing the film for screening, and to our government partners—Creative Australia and Creative Victoria—whose funding makes projects of this scale and ambition possible.
We hope that you enjoy tonight's performance, and if this is your first time with us at Orchestra Victoria, welcome, we hope it won't be your last.
Jacinta Ewers
Chief Executive Officer
Hello,
I still remember the day I first received the edited cut of Parasite.
From the very first scene, the film’s powerful energy completely captivated me, and for two hours I sat frozen, unable to take my eyes away.
At first, I wondered, “What kind of music could possibly match these flawless scenes? Does it even need music?” Days of reflection followed, until, little by little, music the director loved began to emerge. The journey wasn't easy, but the score was complete.
As we all hoped, the film went on to receive extraordinary acclaim worldwide, setting records that may never be repeated. It has been six years since the film was made, but when I was invited to take part in presenting a live performance alongside the screening at the Melbourne International Film Festival, I was truly delighted.
The chance to perform music from a film I love so deeply, with the magnificent Orchestra Victoria, and in the beautiful city of Melbourne for its wonderful audiences, fills me with joy and gratitude.
Preparing for this performance has renewed my admiration for this extraordinary film. I wish to thank the Melbourne International Film Festival, Concert Lab, and Orchestra Victoria for making it possible, and especially all of you for sharing this moment with us.
Kindly warmest,
Jung Jae-il
