About Sarah

Cellist Sarah Cuming has been with Orchestra Victoria for 22 years. Born and bred in Melbourne, Sarah began playing cello at the age of nine, because there was a cello at school that was the right size for her and no one else wanted to learn it. (She later discovered her grandmother played cello in her youth and she gave Sarah a full-sized one.) After graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts, she studied under Janis Laurs, Philip Green and Nelson Cook in Melbourne, Tania Prochazka in Canada and Walter Despalj on a Churchill Fellowship in Zagreb. She has performed with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Australian Pops Orchestra, Aequales Ensemble, Wind Power, Oz Opera, Chambermaid Opera and Trio Nova. She loves Beethoven quartets, Brahms chamber music and symphonies, Mozart symphonies and Puccini operas and is inspired by Richard Gill, whom she met when she was a student at National Music Camp and sang in his madrigal group.

Sarah Cuming’s Tutti Cello position is generously supported by Angela Kayser.
