From the heartfelt charm of Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings to the bold freshness of Jessie Montgomery’s Starburst, this is a concert that pulses with life and light. Opening with Tchaikovsky’s lush homage to Mozart—overflowing with sweeping melodies and tender nostalgia—the program then shifts into the crisp, witty world of Stravinsky’s Octet for Winds, a work full of playful invention and stylish surprises.
Jessie Montgomery’s Starburst, a sonic firecracker written in 2012, lights up the stage with rhythmic drive and kaleidoscopic colour—proof that string orchestras can still surprise and delight. And to close, Copland’s beloved Appalachian Spring offers a breath of fresh air. In its original chamber version for 13 players, the music is intimate and evocative, painting an idealised American landscape where hope, stillness, and joy quietly unfold.
Under the baton of the luminescent Australian Conductor Carlo Antonioli, this concert is an invitation: to reflect, to reconnect, and to be dazzled. Whether you're a regular concert goer or curious for something new, this is a night to savour.
This program was developed in a studio managed by the City of Melbourne’s Meat Market tenancy program.
