Jacinta Ewers, Chief Executive Officer

Welcome to Hanson Dyer Hall, for tonight's special performance of Prismatic Echoes. It is a joy to welcome back Jonathan Lo to the podium. We know that you will enjoy the evening of music he has crafted for you all, from Ravel, to Telemann to Farrenc, and are sure that tonight's performance will take you on a musical journey.

A special welcome tonight to our friends from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and Melbourne Youth Orchestra who receive free access to this concert series as part of Orchestra Victoria's commitment to equitable access to high quality musical performance opportunities.

I would also like to take this moment to thank our philanthropic community and our government partners Creative Victoria and Creative Australia alongside our venue partner in the University of Melbourne. This concert series wouldn't be possible without their support.

Enjoy!

Dear friends,

Welcome to 'Prismatic Echoes', our second musical feast presented as part of our Meat Market and Southbank Series for 2025.

Tonight’s program, conducted by the exceptional Jonathan Lo, invites us into a vibrant dialogue between centuries, styles, and textures. We begin with Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin, a tribute not only to baroque elegance but to personal memory—music that dances with grace even in the shadow of loss.

Telemann’s bright and joyful Trumpet Concerto in D major follows, featuring our brilliant Section Principal Trumpet, Mark Fitzpatrick, as soloist. This baroque gem showcases the trumpet’s regal flair and virtuosity, offering a sparkling counterpoint to the evening’s more expansive works.

We close with Louise Farrenc’s magnificent Symphony No. 3—a Romantic-era masterpiece that has too long remained in the shadows. Powerful, expressive, and meticulously crafted, it is a work that richly deserves the spotlight it receives tonight.

Thank you for joining us for this special performance. Whether you are a longtime supporter or discovering us for the first time, we are honoured to share this music with you—and look forward to welcoming you again soon.

Explore Season 2025

In the upcoming season, we celebrate this unique capacity through a range of partnerships, but most proudly with our Southbank Series and new initiative, Meet @ the Market, programs that place our musicians front and centre. Here, our tradition charts a new course with a diverse concert repertoire, exploring stories both timeless and contemporary, and featuring works beyond our core opera and ballet repertoire.

Season 2025 celebrates all that we bring to the Victorian landscape, underscoring our role in enriching cultural experiences for audiences across our state.
